Gardeners: Use Natural Ingredients to Keep Your Hands Looking Great
It’s a well-known fact that working in a vegetable plot, herb patch, or flower garden can be very hard on your hands. If you are a gardener, you probably already know the advantages that fresh homegrown produce can bring to your diet, but did you realize that some of the same ingredients you love to eat can also benefit your skin and keep it looking young? Here are a few ways that you can use natural ingredients to make your own hand and nail treatments.
Combine one part sugar with 2 parts olive or canola oil. Use as a scrub to exfoliate dry skin on your hands, feet, arms, or legs. The granules of sugar help remove dry skin and calluses while the oil penetrates and moisturizes. Use this about once a week to keep skin soft and supple.
If your hands get scraped or cut while working in the garden, make a strong tea of fresh lavender or calendula flowers by boiling several blossoms in a small amount of water. Strain out the organic matter and use the room-temperature water to soak and soothe your hands. Rub a small amount of Vitamin E or honey on troublesome cuts or bruises.
Here is a recipe for a hand cream that can be used several times and day and will save you oodles of money when compared with a commercial product.
½ cup dark sesame oil (this acts as a partial sunscreen, but don’t neglect the real thing.)
3 T. beeswax, grated
1 t. honey
1 T. coconut oil
2 T. distilled or spring water
3 drops lavender essential oil (this is a natural insect repellent)
1 pinch baking soda
Heat all the ingredients in the microwave until the wax and oils are melted and easy to combine. Be sure you don’t let it boil. Stir thoroughly. Allow to cool completely and pour into a covered container. Massage it into your hands several times every day.
Combine the juice of one lemon with eight ounces of plain yogurt. Mix this thoroughly and keep in the refrigerator. Apply to your hands and nails while it is cold to soften skin and strengthen nails. It will also help to reduce swelling in your hands and fingers caused by hot weather.
While most gardeners think of horsetail as a bothersome weed, it actually has a number of beneficial uses. If you don’t have it growing in your own garden, look for it in wooded areas or shady spots. The stems contain silica and other minerals and can help to make your fingernails stronger. Make a solution by covering a teaspoon of chopped, fresh, horsetail stems with ½ cup of boiling water. Let it sit for 30 minutes, strain out the stems, and let the liquid cool. Add 1 teaspoon of honey and pour into a clean jar that has a snug-fitting lid. After a few days, the treatment is ready to be applied to your nails with a cotton swab or small brush. Let it dry and repeat every day. After two weeks or so, you should see an improvement in the condition of your nails.
If your hands turn a yellowish-green after working around your tomato plants, use a green tomato to get them clean. Cut it in half and rub its juice into your hands. Let it sit for five minutes, then wash and moisturize. Your hands will be clean and soft.
Lemon juice is also a good hand cleaner that will help you get dirt and grime off after working outdoors. If you massage it into your hands, and let it penetrate for five minutes before rinsing, it will make your hands smell nice and look spotless.
