Hand and Nail Care
If you are like millions of others and love to grow your own fruits, veggies or flowers, you may think that your hard-working hands need to look like gardener’s hands. In other words, they will probably always be rough, sun-damaged, and chapped with a broken nail or two. You may even assume that stains on your hands from soil, leaves or chemicals are inevitable. All of these assumptions are untrue. Just because you have a green thumb, you don’t need to have hands that will announce your hobby to the world. Here are a few things you should know in order to keep your gardener’s hands looking like you spend all your time drinking tea and eating crumpets.
· Realize that working with soil and washing frequently will dry your hands. This is a fact, but it doesn’t mean that chapping and roughness are inevitable. You just need to be more conscientious about your moisturizing routine. Choose a rich cream that has a natural oil (such as sunflower oil) as its main ingredient and use it often. Apply it to your hands and nails following your shower, before you go to bed, and after every time you wash your hands. If you massage it thoroughly into your skin while it is still damp, the cream will help to hold in the moisture that remains from washing.
· Use a sunscreen on your hands everyday. While many of us have good habits when it comes to applying sunscreens to our necks and faces, our hands tend to be forgotten. Even if you do not plan to work in your garden, or think the day will be cool and cloudy, don’t skip the sunscreen. You need to use it on the backs of your hands as part of your daily routine, in addition to the moisturizer you put on. Sunscreen is more effective if you apply it at least 30 minutes before you are exposed to the sun, so use it every morning. That way, your hands will be protected no matter what activities are on your schedule. Be sure to reapply later in the day if you are gardening in direct sunlight, or have washed the first application off.
· Take special care of your nails. Whenever you use hand cream, rub it into your nails, as well. Your fingernails are porous and tend to lose moisture much faster than your skin. Gently push your cuticles back as you apply moisturizer. This will help to improve the circulation to the part of your hand that encourages healthy nail growth. Keep nails fairly short to avoid breakage as you work, but don’t think that you need to cut them back to the quick. Scratch a bar of soap with your nails before you head to the garden. This will keep dirt from getting under them and make them easy to clean. Never use your fingernails as tools. If you carry a tool caddy with you into the garden, you will have a pruner, fork, or spade handy and avoid the temptation to abuse your nails.
And last but not least; Consider wearing gloves. Many gardeners claim that gloves make it more difficult to do their work, and this may be true if you have only used the old-fashioned, thick, clumsy kind. Ask workers at a nursery or garden store what kinds of gloves they use and you may be surprised at the innovative types that are available. Many have gripper pads on the fingers and palms, and are sized to fit snugly and allow you to feel through the fabric. A great pair of gardening gloves can keep your hands as beautiful and healthy-looking as the flowers and veggies you grow.
