Is There Any Help for Dark Circles Under My Eyes?

Both women and men complain about dark circles under their eyes. They say that people tell them they look tired or ill and they feel like their under-eye shadows make them look older than their years. In fact, dermatologists say that their patients complain about this problem more than any other condition except acne. Is there anything that can be done about those annoying and less-than-flattering dark smudges? What causes them anyway? Are there ways to avoid getting them, or treatments that can make them go away? I looked into the matter, and here are some of the facts that I have learned.

·        The skin around your eyes is thinner than anywhere else on your body, therefore, any change in the veins or capillaries underneath that skin are more noticeable.

·        Dark circles under the eyes are often an inherited or genetic trait. They can be a problem for people of any race or heritage, but they are especially bothersome to those of Southeast Asian, African-American, or southern Mediterranean origin. Excess pigmentation is often present under the eyes in these folks.

·        Another cause of dark circles is allergies. Children and adults who have a reaction to air-borne allergens, or certain foods may get dark circles because their noses are congested. Veins that usually drain through the nose get clogged up when you have an allergic reaction (or even a common cold) and that makes them become wider and darker.

·        Some medications such as birth control pills can cause an increased blood flow around the eyes, and that will make them look darker for the same reason.

·        Under eye circles are not caused because of any behavior of the person who has them. Despite what your mother may have told you, you don’t get them because you stay up all night, or cram for tests, or read too many books.

·        Some people notice darkness under their eyes when they first wake up in the morning. This is probably because gravity causes fluid to collect in our lower eyelids when we are asleep. The puffiness can make our eyes look shadowed.

·        Exposure to the sun often makes the problem worse, so be sure to wear a hypoallergenic sunscreen around your eyes every day.

·         Skin creams that can help to “plump” the skin around your eyes may help them look brighter. Mayo Clinic dermatologists recommend products that contain alpha hydroxy acid, Vitamin C, or Vitamin K for this purpose.

·        Many folks decide that covering their dark circles is the best solution and they use a concealer that has a yellow tint to counteract the blue look around the eyes.

There are some surgical procedures that can help this condition, but they are not right for everyone. Laser treatments can resurface the skin and destroy excess pigment cells, but be aware that require several weeks of recovery time. There are also some plastic surgeons that inject a “filler” substance such as Juvederm under the eyes. This will plump up the skin, but many patients have found that the treatments only last a few months before they must be repeated.
