Lifestyle Changes to Help Acne

No one enjoys the way acne creates unsightly red bumps and painful, pussy spots on their face, chest, neck and back.  Acne vulgaris is the scientific name for acne, and vulgar it seems to sum up how most people feel when they suffer from this skin condition.  Some more common terms for acne include pimples and zits and this skin problem is very common in adolescents but can continue into young adulthood.

Acne is caused by the pores in the skin becoming clogged by oil that would usually move to the surface of the skin and evaporate.  Bacteria loves to breed in an environment like this, and that is what creates the red, inflamed appearance of a pimple.  Acne can simply be unattractive or it can be painful and cause deep scarring in the skin.  Some unfortunate side effects, especially for adolescents, include low self-esteem, depression and thoughts of suicide.  Appearance is very important in our society and for those who have acne on their faces, it is difficult to feel attractive and can be very painful emotionally as well as physically.

For some people, one of the only remedies for acne is simply to wait until your body matures, your hormones levels regulate, and you essentially grow out of it.  This may not be a very comforting thought for a teenager who is frustrated every day when he or she looks in the mirror.  Most people can expect to escape acne outbreaks by the time they reach their mid-twenties but there is no way to be certain when or if acne will clear up completely.  If you are someone who suffers from acne and wants to know about any possible way to accelerate the process of improving your skin, keep reading.

Sometimes, changes in life style, attitude, or habits can actually help your skin's complexion.  Do you experience a lot of stress in your life?  Stress contributes to overproduction of hormones, which in turn causes your skin to produce more oil, which can then get trapped in your pores and create acne.  If possible, look for ways to cut down the stress levels in your life.  Take a relaxing bath at the end of a hard day, practice yoga, ride your bike.  These are all stress reducing activities that will contribute to your overall health as well as help make your skin look its best.  Also, if you regularly consume large amounts of caffeine, it may create a similar effect on your skin as the stress in your life.  When your body starts to experience the jitters of caffeine overload, it may have the same reaction as it would if you were under stress.  Your hormones go wild and your skin produces too much oil.  Make an effort to reduce your caffeine intake every day and see if your complexion improves.

Touching your skin too much is another habit that does not help if you desire a smooth, clear complexion.  Your hands carry oil, bacteria and dirt.  If you pick at the problem areas on your face it is very likely that you will spread even more pore-clogging material around your skin.  It may feel like you are improving your complexion by popping a pimple or picking at a scab, but you are most likely setting yourself up to have a pimple quickly return in the same area.  If you have a painful pimple that you simply must attend to, be sure to wash your hands first and make sure there is no dirt under your fingernails.  It is best to wrap a tissue over your fingers to protect your skin from being damaged by your fingernails.  Gently press the area around the pimple and see if you can get it to pop.  Holding a hot washcloth to the problem area will help the skin soften and may allow the pimple to break more easily.  Be kind to your skin in these circumstances and do not press too hard.  You do not want to create ugly scars to replace the acne on your face.
